Soft Tissue Therapy – Treatments

What do soft tissue massage therapy sessions involve? Can I just come to you for a soft tissue massage at your clinic in Caversham?

When you book a session you are booking time to focus on what matters to you rather than from a set menu.

I treat people not injuries, pregnancy, cancer, pain etc.

You and your story, likes and dislikes, hopes and fears, experiences are unique to you and therefore important!

If you would like to have a chat BEFORE you book with any questions PLEASE reach out via email tbsofttissuetherapy@gmail.com and we can set up a phone call or a Zoom call if you would like!

One of my most frequently asked questions is…

Can I book in for ‘just’ massage ?

YES – Massage & Soft Tissue Therapy are kind of one and the same.

If you ‘just’ want to lay down and have a massage – gentle and flowing OR deeper, more focussed – music on / off – quiet / chatty

– I am here to support you to feel your best and live a full life on your terms.

When you book you can let me know exactly what you are after !

Soft Tissue Therapy is a more up to date term used by sports and remedial massage therapists with advanced training to describe their person centred approach to the treatment (assessment and treatment and ongoing recovery and rehabilitation) of people experiencing chronic or acute musculoskeletal pain or dysfunction caused by any of life’s stresses and from all walks of life.

Although sport can be a common factor with many clients, this is far from being the main issue dealt with.

Alongside a wide range of massage and mobilisation techniques (which may also used by other musculoskeletal therapists like physiotherapists or osteopaths), it can involve movement and exercise, remedial exercise and recovery from injury as well as supporting lifestyle changes to support your physical and emotional health in the longer term and reduce the likelihood of injury and chronic pain.

Pregnant currently ? (Prenatal / Pregnancy Massage)

No worries – I am pregnancy massage trained – my aim is help you feel great and keep you active during this special time as your body changes.

What happens after I book ?

To start to get know you and best prepare the room and session – I will send you a form to fill in ASAP via my booking system (RehabGuru) so I can:

– Understand what you are hoping to get from the session –  a chance to relax and unwind?  what areas you would like treated?  help to reduce pain and discomfort or recovery from sport or office working? support with an injury or a movement?  improved sleep? help with self management of  musculoskeletal pain or lifestyle changes?

-Any treatment preferences you might have  (I don’t expect you to know what these mean) -a ‘sports’ massage?,  myofascial release? use of cups ? tools ? kinesiology taping ? how active or movement based a session you want? music ?  chatty / minimal talking ?, clothed thai yoga massage / stretch based ?

-Your story – your previous medical history and what is going on for you at the moment in your life which might be impacting on your wellbeing  -so I can get a sense of whether there are any reasons that massage therapy is the right thing for you and what techniques are likely to safe or appropriate for you.

-Please feel free to reach out for a chat via email etc to discuss.

When you arrive for your session:

– I will check in with you if there are any changes and depending on the session and your interests 🙂

These will be a mix of:

Listening to your ‘story’ to understand YOU as an unique individual – your history, what and how you feel in your body at rest and when moving; what matters to you: what are your hopes, passions in life and fears related to those.

Movement: Observing and exploring the quality, ease and range of movement currently – working on improving those both in and beyond the treatment room using a variety of massage and movement techniques.

Working with you: using a combination of massage and movement to find what feels better, where there is discomfort. This reduction in symptoms creates a great opportunity to work towards longer term strategies to help keep feeling better!

Modern life can mean we spend a lot of time in ‘fight or flight’ mode and chronic stress can have wide ranging impacts on our health and ability to function personally and professionally. Massage can be a great way (along with movement) to restore balance in our lives and look after our physical and mental health.

Re-introducing movement in a safe environment – often we are recovering from injury, had persistent niggles and discomfort or an episode of pain we become fearful and guarded with movement. Massage and other Soft Tissue Therapy techniques can be powerful tools to ease the feeling of restriction, regain confidence and trust in a movement and start to re-build strength and adaptability so issues are less likely to re-occur.

Working together: to develop self-management and care strategies which work for you and your lifestyle to gain confidence that you can improve your pain and energy levels, so you feel in control and optimistic about living a full and active life.

If you are looking for support with a recent injury / onset of pain – at first our time will be more focussed on improving your symptoms and starting recovery and regaining strength and function and decreasing the chances of re-injury or episodes of pain due to poor recovery through movement and exercises.

Self-knowledge: Many people find Soft Tissue Therapy sessions give them a chance to explore the potential contributors to their pain and discomfort and how it impacts their quality of life: mood, anxiety, social connections, ability to stay active and participate in all the activities they would like: sport, work, hobbies etc.

I can signpost and support you to access tools and resources you might want to explore and exercises and movement drills for you to help you beyond the therapy room.
